About rallyaroundtheworld

In 2002, as a testicular cancer survivor and in celebration of his 10th anniversary of being cancer-free, Brad made a solo bicycle trek from San Diego, CA to St. Augustine, FL covering 3,000 miles in 35 days raising money for the American Cancer Society. Rally Kids welcome your support for the inaugural Rally Around the World for Childhood Cancer Research, which will take place July – September 2012 as a solo, around-the-world motorcycle ride to support the Rally Foundation's mission of empowering volunteers to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. Rally Around the World will mark Brad's upcoming 20th anniversary of being cancer free. The struggles these children endure reach far beyond the personal challenges he faced when fighting cancer and will face on an around-the-world motorcycle ride supporting the Rally Foundation.

Mapping the Ride – Making a Left in Anchorage

Spent the last couple of weeks mapping my around-the-world ride which included Trip Tiks from AAA for the Nashville to Anchorage leg and Halifax to Nashville trek. Found a great online site http://www.drivingtimebetweencities.com which provides global distances, mapping and satellite images of the route.

Also, ordered detailed road maps from http://www.maps2anywhere.com for South Korea, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, Belgium, France, England and Ireland – the entire around-the-world road miles is about 14,500 miles. Nashville to Anchorage – 4300 miles. Vladivostok to Moscow – 6100 miles. Moscow to Berlin – 1200 miles. Berlin to Calais – 600 miles. Calais to Folkestone via EuroTunnel – 20 miles. Folkestone to Holyhead – 300 miles. Dublin to Shannon – 130 miles. Halifax to Nashville – 1800 miles. Oh!…toss in a couple of ferry trips to include a 24 hour trip from Donghae, South Korea to Vladivostok, Russia and a 2-hour trip from Holyhead, England to Dublin, Ireland.

Rally Around the World…What’s this all about?

Rally Kids and I welcome your support for the inaugural Rally Around the World for Childhood Cancer Research, which will take place July – September 2012 as a solo, around-the-world motorcycle ride to support the Rally’s mission of empowering volunteers to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research.

Every school day, two classrooms of children, about 46, are diagnosed with cancer. Cancer is the #1 disease killer of kids ages 0-15 in the US!  With your help, we expect to ride 25,000 miles and raise more than $250,000 to support the Rally Foundation in its quest to fund childhood cancer research projects…that’s why I’m driven to help these kids

In 2002, as a testicular cancer survivor and in celebration of my 10thanniversary of being cancer-free, I made a solo bicycle trek from San Diego, CA to St. Augustine, FL covering 3,000 miles in 35 days raising money for the American Cancer Society.

Rally Around the World will mark my upcoming 20th anniversary of being cancer free. The struggles these children endure reach far beyond the personal challenges I faced when fighting cancer and will face on an around-the-world motorcycle ride.

Hausmann…Their People Do Make the Difference

Back in 2002, Dave Hausmann, CEO Hausmann Industries, reached out to me and generously supported my LifeCycle 2002 event raising money for cancer research – a 3000 mile bicycle ride from San Diego, CA to St Augustine, FL.  Dave is an avid cyclist and truly embodies the spirit of giving and helping other…a genuiness that’s sometimes hard to find.

Hausmann Industries

That same spirit is found with all the folks at Hausmann – a reflection of Dave and his character.  Hausmann’s corporate mission has always included making the finest quality products and delivering the best possible service to our customers. The pursuit of this goal includes maintaining a plant with the best available technology. However, it is the human component that ultimately determines the level of quality produced.

It is our employees’ skills and dedication that separate Hausmann products from our competitors. Their tireless commitment to quality and attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the products we make and the way we relate to our customers. This is why the Hausmann story has spanned 50 years. Over 90% of our products are made in our 65,000 sq. ft. factory in Northvale, New Jersey. Hausmann’s quality products are manufactured for the world, by Americans and made in the U.S.A. We pride ourselves on manufacturing everything we possibly can and only having a few select products made to our specifications by trusted domestic and overseas vendors.

In today’s business environment, staying at the front of the pack is an increasingly harder position to maintain – at Hausmann it is a way of life. Hausmann is committed to maintaining our reputation and position of leadership. We will continue to strive toward this goal every day and it will show in everything we do.

We value your business and want you to know that we appreciate your continued support as we move ahead with confidence and gratitude into the future.

The Route You Say!…

Rally Around the World Route

For now, the route is rather loosely planned to leave Nashville, TN around July 28, then ride to Anchorage, Alaska. From Anchorage I will air-freight my motorcycle and gear to Seoul, South Korea, then take a ferry up to Vladivostok, Russia. From there, the plan is to follow the Trans-Siberian Railway across Russia, into Belarus, then Poland and Western Europe. Will ferry across the English Channel and then the Irish Sea, and fly from Ireland to Halifax, Nova Scotia. From there, the route will run south and return to Nashville, probably in the first week of September and just in time to celebrate National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The entire trip will be about 15,000 road miles and a complete circumnavigation of the world of 25,000 miles…just a short trip around the block I say!!

Selecting A Bike for the Trek…

So what kind of motorcycle does it take to make an around-the-world trek?  Having ridden motorcycles for over 35 years starting with a Harley Davidson 350 Sprint in Fairbanks, AK long ago and riding and owning many types and models since, I ended up with a 2001 Harley Davidson Road King as my road bike of choice for the roads in and around Nashville.

2001 Harley Davidson Road King

As Rally Around the World approached I knew deep down the trip would require a more versatile and functional cycle to make the 15,000 mile trek.  After much contemplation, research and finally just a plain gut-check, I selected the Suzuki V-Strom DL650.

Suzuki V-Strom DL650

In 2002, Suzuki introduced the V-Strom 1000 in a new motorcycle category, the Sport Enduro Tourer. Its running performance and packaging earned worldwide acclaim. In 2003, Suzuki released the V-Strom 650 targeting a wider range of users. This versatile model covers not only daily use such as commuting, but also touring as well…I just knew I was on the right track.

Since getting the bike, I have been adding a number of accessories or “farkles” coming from “function” and “sparkle”.  Started with Rox pivoting risers for handlebar comfort and endurance on the road, Denali panniers from Happy-Trails, GIVI top case and engine guards, Adventure Moto Stuff skid plate and Mad Stad adjustable, windshield mounts to reduce buffeting.  Still have a number of other accessories to add including a GPS and communication system…the jury is still out on the stock seat!!…lastly, all that will be needed is a rider!!
