Motorcycle Express will make all the arrangements for your motorcycle to be shipped, uncrated, by airfreight along with preparing all necessary paperwork and, to make things even better, you can arrange to fly along on the same flight.  I just booked my trip today from London’s Gatwick to Montreal’s Trudeau Airports –  I just drop the bike off the Friday before my Monday flight along with several other minimal requirements.

Motorcycle Express has been shipping motorcycles between North America and Europe for over ten years using a custom designed motorcycle pallet to ship the bike giving you the opportunity to ride your own bike abroad.  They also offer temporary insurance programs – I have opted for the GREEN CARD Program valid all over Europe and Russia.

Natchez Trace – Meriwether Lewis Park

Short camping trip to Meriwether Lewis Park off the Natchez Trace Parkway – Meriwether Lewis of Lewis and Clark fame lost his life there from a couple of gunshot wounds…much debate on whether self-inflicted or from someone there at the local inn.

Anyhow, the trip was a good opportunity to use some of the gear – cooked some freeze dried chicken n rice for dinner and oatmeal and grits for breakfast.   Shanon did terrific since she had the mattress…Me? – quite a few rocks on the ground making for a restless night, but the weather was terrific and a nice fire last night made up for it!

Outfitting the Rally Bike

With each passing day the Rally Bike gets closer & closer to being readied for a 40 day journey around the world…so many details with just 90 days left before the big send off on July 28 from Cool Springs Honda.

Tent, first aid kit, tools,  communications, clothing, maps, GPS, air freight, flights, ferries, camping…just a few of the details!

HJC CL-MAX Repair

                                                                                                                                                                                    After a brief ride the night before last, the face portion of the HJC helmet failed at the hinge points – a weak design with small screws. Stopped by my local Lowe’s and found some aluminum fittings, drilled larger holes and refitted…now far stronger than new!

Alaska Leather Sheepskin Buttpad

Well I finally did it…ordered my very own Alaska Leather deluxe, sheepskin buttpad for the V-Strom.  Decided on the medium size in black with a nose strap – came in the mail late yesterday and haven’t had a chance to get out on the bike.  Alaska Leather has been the home of the sheepskin buttpad since 1979!

Denali Panniers & GIVI Top Case

Installed a pair of Denali aluminum panniers from Happy Trail in powder-coated black and premounted hardware – included the mounting rack system.  Installing the panniers was simple with the easy-to-follow instructions.  Selected the Clif-cut design making the overall profile 3″ narrower putting the load closer to the bike. Also, added the GIVI E52 Maxia Monokey top case using a universal mounting bracket and adding the luggage rack and extra led braking lights for added visibility.  The entire top case is easily removed from the bike – a great spot to lock away your helmet and other valuables during those stops!

Wolfman Explorer Lite Tank Bag

Added the Explorer Lite Tank Bag that seems to be just the right fit for the V-Strom – came with a universal mounting strap that was easily fitted.  Road the Natchez Trace over the weekend and the clear map holder came in handy riding down to Lawrenceberg TN for lunch.  Great spot to keep those items you need quickly and use most often!

Road Map to the World – Garmin zumo 220

Garmin zumo 220

Just installed my Garmin zumo 220 GPS to help me navigate this around-the-world trek.  Especially designed for the motorcycle, the zumo 220 is water-proof offering all the features Garmin users have learned to trust.  I also used RAM Mounts and the “Strombone” mounting systems to attach the unit to the dash; worked over the weekend to hardwire the GPS to the ignition system assuring adequate power and battery life.  Finally, purchased both the Garmin European and Russsian software mapping to support my printed maps – always smart to have backups!!

Recalibration of V-Strom Speedometer

Austin Burge RepairAustin Burge has developed in ingenious speedometer modification for the V-Strom that recalibrates the mile per hour and kilometers per hour variance.  As most riders know, the V-Strom speedometer comes from the factory reading 7.7% higher than the the actual speed.  To correct this, you can simply replace the speedometer guage place with the Burge design for either MPH or KPH depending on your where you are riding.

Another great bonus is that the odometer is not affected as common with electronic modifications that will adversely effect the mileage readings.
